Summary: "The history of women's roles in the coalfields and communities of Appalachia has been poorly documented. What has been recorded depicts Appalachian women as suppressed by a male-dominated culture. In Women of Coal, photographs and words of self-expression combine to challenge the stereotypes of mountain and coalfield women." "Heirs to a rich tradition of protest that extends from the women who endured incredible hardships in the early coal camps, the women in this book do not see themselves as stereotypical."

- 974.4 OBR At home in the heart of Appalachia / John O'Brien
John O'Brien's deeply evocative book re- veals a place and a way of life--and the lives of an estranged father and son whose differences rest, ironically, in their own powerful bonds to Appalachia. John O'Brien was born in Philadelphia, his father having left his beloved home in the West Virginia mountains after an impoverished childhood made all the more painful by family tragedy. Struggling to escape a father defeated by disappointment, displacement, and poverty, John too left home. When John decided to settle near his father's birthplace in West Virginia, he hoped to comprehend the elder O'Brien's attachment to the land, as well as the disabling fatalism he had carried north. What he discovered is hardly the mythic Appalachia most Americans imagine, but a world of extravagant beauty--lush with green mountains, deep forests, ice-cold trout streams, and small hill farms. The people we meet who inhabit this land are for the most part unpretentious, working class, straightforward, open, commonsensical, and easygoing. They tend to look back more than most Americans do, defining themselves by how they fit into an extended family that includes their ancestors. We are in a mountain culture that feels old and deeply rooted, that follows a traditional way of life. It is a world the author would finally love and call his own. We also come face-to-face with provincialism, intolerance, and--perhaps Appalachia's defining legacy--the horrors of the coalfields and chemical plants. We see clearly what rapacious greed and exploitation have done for generations to much of the landscape and to the lives of the people. And we learn of the stream of reformers and missionaries, ever ready to show Appalachia the way, whose real contributions tend to be negligible or absurd. In this clear-eyed, beautifully rendered telling of his story and his father's, John O'Brien gives us, as well, the history and true heart of Appalachia. From the cover.

- 975 KEP Our southern highlanders; a narrative of adventure in the southern Appalachians and a study of the life among the mountaineers, by Horace Kephart ...
Born in East Salem, Pennsylvania in 1862, Horace Kephart went on to become a leading literary figure in early 20th century North Carolina. Prior to moving to western North Carolina and becoming a full time writer, Kephart established a career as a librarian. While still a librarian, Kephart began writing articles on outdoor life among his professional publications. This interest culminated in his first book, Camping and Woodcraft, originally published in 1906. Later, Kephart turned his writing skills towards the successful promotion of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Shortly before his death in 1931, Kephart served as president of the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association from 1929 to 1930. Of the many curious, colorful, and misunderstood inhabitants of the Appalachian Mountains the Melungeons may be the most curious, colorful, and misunderstood. "On various censuses, this people have been categorized as White on one, Free Persons of Color, Mulatto, Indian, and even Portuguese on others. Many theories have been considered, concerning the race and origin of this olive skinned people. In the 1800's, they were most often found in Hawkins and Hancock,Tennessee as well as in Lee and Scott Counties of Virginia and surrounding areas, including near places in Kentucky. Some have said that they were a tri-racial mixture of White, Black, and Indian (American); others say they were just what they said they were Porty-ghee (Portuguese), while others say they were of Indian and Portuguese mix. Concerning where they originated, some have said they were descendants of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, or early shipwrecked Portuguese, or one of the Lost Tribes of Israel, or that they were descendants of the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians, among other theories." - 975.4 HIS Appalachian passage / Helen B. Hiscoe ; foreword by Barbara Ellen Smith
Appalachian Passage is based on the journal kept by Helen B. Hiscoe during the year that she, her physician husband, and their baby daughter spent in a West Virginia coal-mining camp. When he reported to Coal Mountain in June 1949 as the new company doctor, Bonta Hiscoe was young, idealistic, and unprepared for a practice in a remote "hollow" forty-five miles from the nearest hospital. With no trained help and substandard facilities, he was charged with the care of more than four hundred miners and their families.
Dr. Hiscoe found the work both challenging and exhausting and his wife was immediately drafted to assist him. Her honest, direct descriptions of life in Coal Mountain reveal a people at once impoverished yet fiercely proud, remarkably adapted to their circumstances and solidly set in their ways. Equally contradictory was the country itself, whose wild beauty contrasted sharply with its strip mines, treacherous roads, and barely adequate dwellings.
