Copy List: Southern Appalachia CollectionJ.S. Battle High School
Date July 8, 2014
The Southern Appalachian Collection consists of over 500 titles in the categories of general works, philosophy, religion, social sciences, linguistics, pure sciences, applied sciences, arts and recreation, literature, history, fiction. In addition to books, the collection includes journals..., maps, pamphlets, sheet music, paintings and pictures, dozens of discs and cassette recordings, slides, films and filmstrips.
The items in the collection offer a snapshot of scholarship in the nascent field of Appalachian studies in the 1960s and early 1970s. Quite a number of these holdings are unique; others are available only in area universities such as East Tennessee State University, The University of Virginia at Wise, and Appalachian State University which offer programs in Appalachian Studies.*

Summary: From 1861 to 1865, the border separating eastern Kentucky and south-western Virginia represented a major ideological split. This book shows how military invasion of this region led to increasing guerrilla warfare, and how regular armies and state militias ripped communities along partisan lines, leaving wounds long after the end of the Civil War.

The single most important work on the history of Sullivan County, Tennessee, this reprint has the added value of a name index. The first nineteen chapters of the volume deal with early activities in the Holston Valley, starting with the Cherokee settlements. It records the history of the area with a sympathetic account of the Cherokee’s plight while detailing the lives of the brave frontier men and women and their constant battles with the Indians.

Summary: All summer, Jess pushed himself to be the fastest boy in the fifth grade, and when the year's first school-yard race was run, he was going to win. But his victory was stolen by a newcomer, by a girl, one who didn't even know enough to stay on the girls' side of the playground. Then, unexpectedly, Jess finds himself sticking up for Leslie, for the girl who breaks rules and wins races. The friendship between the two grows as Jess guides the city girl through the pitfalls of life in their small, rural town, and Leslie draws him into the imaginary world of magic and ceremony called Terabithia. Here, Leslie and Jess rule supreme among the oaks and evergreens, safe from the bullies and ridicule of the mundane world. Safe until an unforeseen tragedy forces Jess to reign in Terabithia alone, and both worlds are forever changed.
