The Southern Appalachian Collection consists of over 500 titles in the categories of general works, philosophy, religion, social sciences, linguistics, pure sciences, applied sciences, arts and recreation, literature, history, fiction. In addition to books, the collection includes journals..., maps, pamphlets, sheet music, paintings and pictures, dozens of discs and cassette recordings, slides, films and filmstrips.
The items in the collection offer a snapshot of scholarship in the nascent field of Appalachian studies in the 1960s and early 1970s. Quite a number of these holdings are unique; others are available only in area universities such as East Tennessee State University, The University of Virginia at Wise, and Appalachian State University which offer programs in Appalachian Studies.*
