"In 1920, when action was taken by interested citizens to begin the building of a new school, Mr. and Mrs. Backer gave the town the lots for the school site and the athletic field (Backer Park).

"Construction was started in 1921 after Mr. Backer had plans drawn. Many men gave their labor and Mr. Backer sent workers from the Extract Plant to help. The walls of the building were rock taken from Laurel River bed."
