Lee Smith is the author of 17 works of fiction including Fair and Tender Ladies, Oral History, and recent novel, Guests on Earth. She has received many awards including the North Carolina Award for Literature and an Academy Award in Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; her novel The Last Girls was a New York Times bestseller as well as winner of the Southern Book Critics Circle Award. Dimestore, A Writer’s Life collection of personal essays, was published in March 2016.
The Washington County Public Library has a number of items related to the work and career of Lee Smith. There is a box and a half filled with literary criticism, in addition to boxes of reviews, the script of a play based on her novel "Devil's Dream," along with an accompanying soundtrack, and numerous clippings and promotional items from Lee Smith's public appearances, including a 1998 Symposium held in her honor at the Washington County Public Library.
