1934 Festival

John Powell and musicians

Festival organizer John Powell instructs musicians W.B. Hunt, Emory Stroop, C.B Wohlford, Jess Johnston (with fiddle), Winston Wilkinson, Horton Barker, and Council Cruise (seated bottom right), on the fine points of traditional music

“The fourth festival was held17-18 August. Although heavy rains hampered the performances many of the regular performers were there (S.F. Powell, a group of sacred singers brought from Galax by W.E. Alderman, Sailor Dad Hunt, fiddler Howard Wyatt, banjo player C.B. Wohlford, clog dancer Harve Sheets, and ballad singer Horton Barker). George Pullen Jackson reported that instead of the one or two reluctant ballad singers of the first year, there were twenty-two.”
